The Stone Industry in Northwestern Ontario With the forestry industry in crisis, communities throughout Northwestern Ontario are considering ways to diversify their economies. Many are looking at exploring the knowledge-based economy rather than resources that they have depended heavily on in the past. As indicated by the current levels of mining and mineral exploration (gold, palladium, base metals, and amethyst), it is dear that mineral resources abound in Northwestern Ontario . Another untapped resource is comprised of the various dimension stones such as granite, marble, and soapstone. However, are enough of these resources available in our region to support a dimensional stone industry in Northern Ontario? A brief look at the dimension stone industry reveals that the opportunity looks promising for Northwestern Ontario. Several independent and government funded studies have indicated that there is significant potential to discover and develop quarries throughout the region. The geological setting of the region is excellent for the development of not only granite, but a host of other stone types such as marble, soapstone, sandstone, stromatolites etc. The following link will provide you with studies and publications dealing with the dimension stone in Northwestern Ontario. Studies have been grouped into five categories: Technical Studies, Labour Market Studies, Transportation Studies, Environmental Studies, and Other . An abstract of each study or publication is provided, and the full document is available to order from:
