Level of
Education
In the five years between
1996 and 2001, the level of education underwent both major and
minor changes. In 1996, 30% of the population aged 15 years of age
or older did not have a grade 12 diploma; however, by 2001 only 28%
of the over 20-year-old population did not have a grade 12 diploma.
In 1996, 6% of the population over 15-years-old had a trades
certificate, but in 2001 that number rose to 23% of the over
20-years-old population.
Atikokan is becoming a
community that recognizes the value and the importance of continued
life-long learning. In 2001, 46% of those over 20 years of age had
some form of post-secondary education.
Post-Secondary
Education
The following table
illustrates the distribution of Atikokans 15 years and over
population that had obtained post-secondary qualifications in 1996.
At that time, 37.8% of the 15 years and over population had
post-secondary qualifications. Engineering and applied technologies
and trades were the areas of study that were of the greatest
interest to male residents of Atikokan. Educational, recreational
and counselling services were the areas of study that were of the
greatest interest to the female residents.
