Board of Governance

This Guide was developed as part of a training initiative sponsored by Industry Canada’s FedNor program, and the Northwestern Ontario Development Network, a group representing the interests of Community Futures Development Corporations and municipal economic development officers in Northwestern Ontario.

One of the greatest needs reported by the member boards of the Northwestern Ontario Development Network was the need for board member training. When new directors arrive at the board table, many do not have a clear understanding of their role. While not a panacea for all board training needs, this guide is intended to provide a general overview of a board member’s role, responsibilities and best practices.

Prior to determining the content for this Guide, a self-assessment questionnaire was prepared and distributed to all board members of the Community Futures Development Corporations in Northwestern Ontario. The responses from the boards revealed the areas where training was needed most and these subject areas became the focus for this Guide.
